2024 Utah Transportation Conference

RSG Principal Stephen Lawe will present at the 2024 Utah Transportation Conference from November 5 to November 7, 2024.

Stephen will share insights during two sessions. His first session, “Why travel forecasting is more complex and more important than ever before,” will explore the variability of travel behaviors and the opportunities that can come from addressing these challenges. It will also discuss how to improve forecasting in the planning process and what tools are available. The second session, “Quality of Life and Transportation Planning,” will discuss how Utah DOT's UVision planning process can guide statewide, regional, and area-specific planning and policies to deliver aligned transportation action.

CATMA 2024 Transportation Summit

RSG Managing Consultant Jonathan Slason will lead a presentation on Burlington's 2030 District's PTP program during the Chittenden Area Transportation Management Association (CATMA) 2024 Transportation Summit on October 15, 2024.

The presentation, titled “Burlington 2030 District and Property Transportation Plans,” will discuss the Burlington 2030 District’s goal of reducing transportation emissions by 50% by 2030. Burlington is the home of one of the nation’s twenty 2030 Districts. The Burlington 2030 District is a private/public partnership working to reduce building energy consumption, water usage, and transportation emissions by 50% by 2030. Jonathan will share how RSG developed a customized survey to analyze and reduce transportation emissions for employees working in member buildings. This initiative provides detailed insights into annual greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and offers strategies for supporting sustainable travel behavior changes.

Indiana Transportation Applications Group Meeting

The presentation, titled “Development of a Truck and Light Commercial Vehicle Model in Indianapolis,” will explore the development of a commercial vehicle model for the Indianapolis Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) using passively collected data. This model offers valuable insights into commercial vehicle movements within Indianapolis, aiding in more accurate transportation planning and decision-making.

2024 AEP80 Summer Meeting

RSG Senior Analyst Emma Butterfield coauthored a paper she will present during the Transportation Research Board's (TRB) Summer Meeting of the Noise and Vibration Committee (“2024 AEP80 Summer Meeting”) from July 14-17, 2024.

The presentation, titled “Traffic Noise Modeling of Short Safety Barriers in Maryland,” provides an overview of modeling methods for calculating the noise reduction ability of short barriers in Maryland. While commonly constructed for safety, short barriers have been shown to reduce traffic noise in studies conducted by several state departments of transportation. This presentation extends the prior research to include additional sites measured throughout Maryland.

RSG Principal Ken Kaliski coauthored a paper that he will present during NOISE-CON 2024 from June 10-12, 2024.

The presentation, titled “Times to Stabilize Sound Metrics in Rural Areas – How Long Should You Monitor?”, will explore how day-to-day rural sound levels can vary significantly over time compared to urban areas. Their findings on the stabilization of various sound level metrics will reveal optimal monitoring durations to capture statistically stable sample recommendations. Another paper that Ken coauthored, “A Collaborative Approach to Low-Frequency Noise Mitigation,” will also be presented by his coauthor during NOISE-CON 2024.

2024 Spring North Carolina Model Users Group Meeting

RSG Managing Consultant Kyeongsu Kim will deliver a presentation during the North Carolina Model Users Group (NCMUG) meeting on April 17, 2024.

His presentation, titled “Conducting a Regional Travel Model Update and Regional Long-Range Transportation Plan Update Simultaneously for Better Planning/Modeling Integration,” will discuss RSG's work to update a travel demand model and support a transportation plan update in Anchorage, Alaska. The presentation will explore how integrating traditional and strategic model development with metropolitan transportation planning can enhance flexibility, responsiveness to new planning questions, and sensitivity to compact development by demonstrating early alignment and narrowing scenarios for analysis.

TRB Webinar: Unveiling the Art of Multimethod Sampling for Travel Surveys

RSG Managing Consultant Abigail Rosenson will moderate the question-and-answer portion of a Transportation Research Board (TRB) webinar, titled ā€œUnveiling the Art of Multimethod Sampling for Travel Surveys.ā€

The webinar will cover multimethod sampling in travel surveys, focusing on using community outreach, panels, and regional entities for improved population representation. It will explore the initial sample design decisions, data integration from various sources, and the complementary use of probability and nonprobability samples. Participants will learn to assess and apply weighting to multimethod samples and implement best practices from relevant case studies.

This webinar requires pre-registration to attend. Registration is free for employees of TRB sponsors as well as Titanium and Cobalt Global Affiliates, and $100 for all other attendees.
