2024 AMPO Planning Tools & Training Symposium

RSG Managing Consultant Jonathan Slason will co-present during the 2024 AMPO Planning Tools & Training Symposium on May 7, 2024. His presentation, titled “How VisionEval and ActivitySim Complement Each Other to Answer a Variety of Planning Questions,” will discuss how VisionEval and ActivitySim provide similar but unique perspectives for metropolitan planning organizations. The presentation will discuss how both tools have been used in concert to guide and inform agencies' long-range plans. Jonathan will co-present with Guy Rousseau from the Atlanta Regional Commission. 2024 Spring North Carolina Model Users Group Meeting

RSG Managing Consultant Kyeongsu Kim will deliver a presentation during the North Carolina Model Users Group (NCMUG) meeting on April 17, 2024.

His presentation, titled “Conducting a Regional Travel Model Update and Regional Long-Range Transportation Plan Update Simultaneously for Better Planning/Modeling Integration,” will discuss RSG's work to update a travel demand model and support a transportation plan update in Anchorage, Alaska. The presentation will explore how integrating traditional and strategic model development with metropolitan transportation planning can enhance flexibility, responsiveness to new planning questions, and sensitivity to compact development by demonstrating early alignment and narrowing scenarios for analysis.

TRB Webinar: Unveiling the Art of Multimethod Sampling for Travel Surveys

RSG Managing Consultant Abigail Rosenson will moderate the question-and-answer portion of a Transportation Research Board (TRB) webinar, titled “Unveiling the Art of Multimethod Sampling for Travel Surveys.”

The webinar will cover multimethod sampling in travel surveys, focusing on using community outreach, panels, and regional entities for improved population representation. It will explore the initial sample design decisions, data integration from various sources, and the complementary use of probability and nonprobability samples. Participants will learn to assess and apply weighting to multimethod samples and implement best practices from relevant case studies.

This webinar requires pre-registration to attend. Registration is free for employees of TRB sponsors as well as Titanium and Cobalt Global Affiliates, and $100 for all other attendees.

Oregon Modeling Statewide Collaborative: Land-Use Modeling Special Session

RSG Market Leader Jeff Frkonja will deliver a presentation during the Oregon Modeling Statewide Collaborative (OMSC) meeting on April 3, 2024.

His presentation, titled “Trend-based Tools for Allocating Future Land Use in Travel Demand Models,” will provide an overview of historic-trend-based approaches, including past housing unit development by zone as a basis, past land change as a basis, and other options. The OMSC comprises volunteers from state, regional, and local governmental agencies who work to ensure Oregon has the right data, tools, skills, and expertise needed to answer important questions about our transportation systems, land uses, and economy.

ActivitySim: An Open-Source Activity-Based Travel Demand Model with an Application in Michigan

RSG Consultant Ali Etezady will present at Michigan State University on Friday, March 8, 2024.

Ali's presentation will describe RSG's work developing an activity-based travel demand model using ActivitySim for the Southeast Michigan Council of Governments (SEMCOG). SEMCOG's new activity-based model more accurately captures and represents changing travel patterns and population levels.

Geotab ITS @ Connect

RSG is thrilled to join members from Geotab ITS during the Geotab Connect conference in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Thursday, February 15, 2024.

RSG Managing Consultant Kevin Johnson will be sharing insights from work our team members performed using Geotab data. Specifically, the presentation will describe the use of Geotab data to better understand commercial vehicle flows and integrate these into the existing regional travel model to better evaluate and identify infrastructure needs. Kevin will also describe the use of travel models to identify future network deficiencies and select projects to address those deficiencies.

RSG will deliver a planning presentation during the ITE/IMSA Annual Conference and Exhibition in Bellevue, Washington, on February 13, 2024.

RSG Market Leader Jeff Frkonja and RSG Consultant Teddy Lin will deliver a presentation titled “Localization of the PSRC Regional Model for Pierce County, City of Seatac, and Seatac Airport.” Their presentation will detail RSG's customization of the Puget Sound Regional Council's SoundCast model for Pierce County, the city of SeaTac, and SEA airport. We're excited to gather at the 2024 Transportation Research Board (TRB) Annual Meeting from January 7 to January 11, 2024.

RSGers are presenting posters and lectures on several topics, including changes in travel behavior due to the pandemic, recurrent household travel survey programs, and the use of strategic modeling tools like VisionEval for exploratory scenario planning.

Portland State University Transportation Seminar

RSG is excited to participate in the Portland State University (PSU) Transportation Seminar series in Portland, Oregon, on November 17, 2023.

RSG Director Jonathan Slason and ODOT Principal Planner Adam Argo will deliver a presentation titled “Oregon Transportation: Innovations in the Exploratory Scenario Planning Approach.” Their presentation will discuss how RSG and the Oregon Department of Transportation used cutting-edge tools like VisionEval and TMIP-EMAT to develop an innovative scenario planning model for the Oregon Transportation Plan (OTP). The OTP used groundbreaking methods to communicate how investment strategies could impact regions and households across the state for the next 20-25 years and prioritizes equity, safety, sustainability, economic vitality, and multimodal travel options.

2023 AMPO Annual Conference

RSG is excited to participate in the 2023 Association of Metropolitan Planning Organizations (AMPO) Annual Conference in Cleveland, Ohio, from September 26 to September 29, 2023.

RSG Consultant Caroline Wood will deliver a presentation titled “From Commutes to Couches: The Evolution of Telework and Trip Replacement Behaviors,” which will explore the rise in teleworking, the impacts of trip replacement behaviors like food delivery, and the current trends in travel modes and purposes. Using data from recurrent travel surveys, including the Metropolitan Council’s Travel Behavior Inventory, the Puget Sound Regional Council’s Regional Travel Study, and the Triangle Travel Survey, Caroline will share insights into changes in travel patterns, comparing the period before the pandemic to the present. Caroline will deliver her presentation with Dennis Farmer, a Planning Analyst at Metropolitan Council.

With a spotlight on teleworking trends and their correlation to various factors such as age, income, and industry, the session aims to give MPOs actionable insights for effective post-pandemic planning.

European Transport Conference 2023

RSG is excited to share insights into our team's travel model development work during the European Transport Conference (ETC) 2023, hosted at the Bovisa Campus of the Polytechnic University of Milan, Italy, from September 6 to September 8, 2023.

RSG Senior Director Joel Freedman and RSG Senior Consultant Nagendra Dhakar will be presenting on two topics at ETC 2023. The first topic, “Modelling vehicle type with autonomous vehicle extension in an activity-based travel model framework,” will discuss ActivitySim and the integration of existing vehicle-type models with extension to include autonomous vehicles for the Metropolitan Washington region and San Diego, California. The second topic, “Incorporating telecommuting in forecasting travel models,” will describe how activity-based and strategic planning travel models can be leveraged to account for an uptick in remote work following the pandemic.

52nd International Congress and Exposition on Noise Control Engineering: Inter-Noise 2023

RSG is thrilled to contribute our noise control engineering expertise to the 52nd International Congress and Exposition on Noise Control Engineering (Inter-Noise 2023) in Chiba, Japan, which begins on Sunday, August 20, 2023.

RSG Senior Director Dana Lodico, PE, INCE Bd. Cert. will deliver a lecture on acoustical consulting to the I-INCE Practice of Noise Control School while in Japan. The lecture, which is available on an invitation-only basis to students and other young professionals registered at Inter-Noise 2023, will discuss noise control engineering projects in the context of transportation, renewable energy, and community planning projects.

RSG Principal Ken Kasliski, PE, QEP, INCE Bd. Cert. will also have his work represented at Inter-Noise 2023. Ken coauthored “Status of the revision of ISO 1996-1 standard on the assessment of environmental noise.” His paper will be presented by coauthor Douglas Manvell. Their work will be published in the proceedings of Inter-Noise 2023.

This engaging session will bring together several industry experts to discuss the use, challenges, and value of big data for travel models. Its focus will be on how practitioners verify both the accuracy and representation of big data. Kevin will describe how RSG's mobility data analytics service is helping our clients understand their data requirements, the advantages and limitations of diverse mobility data types, and how these sources can be employed to achieve their objectives in a defensible, straightforward, and cost-effective manner.
